About The Common Market: HISTORY
The Common Market is a non-profit corporation launched after a three year planning process undertaken by several organizations active in the local food movement in Philadelphia. The planning partner organizations came together around the dual goals of expanding the accessibility of local food to populations in urban Philadelphia and helping the viability of family farms in the countryside surrounding Philadelphia. The Common Market began operations in July 2008. Since then, it has sold over $500k of local farm product, serving primarily hospitals, schools and universities. The business has consistently achieved its revenue, cost and fundraising projections and its operations are on course to become financially self-sustaining in 2011.
